Nvidia Shield Tablet fixed

This tablet is the Nvidia Shield K1. It is very nice and I want one for myself!

This repair is for a family member who maybe needed something a little more rugged. Anyway, it was dropped while the micro usb charging cable was still plugged in!

Current symptoms: does not charge at all, and the battery is dead so the tablet will not boot

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Plug in the charger cord and observe. Does the plug fit snugly or does it feel loose? Does it wiggle around?
  2. Attempt to start the device

Action:

It was pretty obvious at this point the micro usb port was damaged and I was not going to get any further the way it was.

First thing was a temporary fix. Disassembly of the case and the logic board, including de-soldering the battery leads.

Thankfully, my favorite site (you guessed it – ifixit.com!) has more detailed instructions. You need a 60W soldering iron and an old plastic ID card, hotel key, or a plastic spudger tool before you try it. You can get the tools you need from the same site: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nvidia+Shield+Tablet+K1+Micro+USB+Port+Replacement/60621

You also need the right micro usb port as a replacement. I ordered a 2-pack from ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Micro-USB-Charging-Port-Sync-For-NVIDIA-Shield-K1-P1794W-AT-T-LTE-Tablet-USA/263048283227?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

For a temporary quick fix, I cleaned out the port gently with the point of a tiny pair of tweezers. A lot of lint and dirt came out! Then I bent the port back into shape with a pair of pliers. When I put the device back together and plugged it in, it seemed to be charging okay!

The next morning I took a look – the device booted just fine and had 100% battery life. Unfortunately neither the front or rear cameras are working so I’ll have to check out those ribbon cable connections when I take the thing apart again! More to come on this – I’ll update when I receive the new ports.
